How to Prepare for the
Speaking Module
In this section, you will
engage in an 11—to 14-minute conversation with the examiner, split into three
parts. The first focuses on familiar topics such as your personal life, family,
and everyday experiences. The second involves discussing a specific topic
chosen by the examiner, while the third is a broader conversation to evaluate
your ability to participate in a discussion.
Do’s:
- Utilize Preparation Time: Even if you're confident about your answers, use
the preparation time to structure your thoughts.
- Use Connectors: Incorporate phrases like
"furthermore," "additionally," or "on the other
hand" to make your speech flow more smoothly and enhance coherence.
- Ask for Clarification: If something is unclear, it's better to ask
the examiner to rephrase rather than make assumptions.
- Speak for the Full Two Minutes: In Part 2, ensure you keep talking for the
allotted time.
- Acknowledge Different Perspectives: In Part 3, discuss varying points of view to
demonstrate your ability to engage in meaningful discussion.
Don’ts:
- Avoid Short Answers: Providing only brief responses can hinder your
performance. Expand your answers to show your language skills.
- Don't Go Back to Correct Mistakes: Keep moving forward even if you notice an
error; correcting yourself may disrupt your fluency.
- Don’t Rush: Speaking too quickly can increase the likelihood of errors. Focus
on clear, steady speech.
- Avoid Memorized Responses: Pre-rehearsed answers can make the
conversation feel unnatural and disconnected from the actual exchange.
