IELTS General Training (IELTS GT) is one of the two IELTS test versions, the other being Academic.
It’s designed to assess the English-language proficiency of individuals wishing to work, train, study, or
immigrate to a place where English is the main language of communication.
The test takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes and is divided into four distinct modules:
Listening (30 minutes): Four recorded monologues and conversations.
Reading (60 minutes): Three long reading passages with tasks.
Writing (60 minutes): A letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) and a short essay.
Speaking (11-14 minutes): Face-to-face interview, short speech, and discussion.
The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are all taken consecutively on the same day. The Speaking component may be scheduled on the same day or
within 7 days of the other components.
Your IELTS score, also known as the Band Score, will range from 0 to 9. Each section of the test receives a band score,
and the average of these creates your overall band score.
For example, if you score a 7 in Listening, 8 in Reading, 6 in Writing, and 7 in Speaking, your overall score would be the average of these, which is 7.
This scoring method is used to give a clear picture of your ability to communicate in English in different situations, especially at work. It helps show
whether you can understand and talk about important topics, ensuring you can get by in places where English is commonly used, such as in a job, training program, or a new country.
